HLMT makes grants to cover course-fees and essential study expenses for student midwives in Liberia who would not otherwise have sufficient funds to train to become qualified midwives.
This enables poor but skilful Liberian students to study midwifery. Any citizen of Liberia with the necessary qualifications wishing to study midwifery is eligible to apply. The grants ensure that the best possible students become qualified midwives rather than only those whose financial circumstances enable them to study. Grants are over £900 per year for each student midwife for each of four years. As HLMT grows, we will be able to increase the number of grants offered.
The Trust has been set up in memory of Helen Loewenstein, a remarkable midwife and someone who touched the lives of so many, both in the UK and Liberia.
