HLMT Newsletter, September 2023

Dear HLMT supporter,

It’s been a busy period for HLMT, with a number of events scheduled in the coming months. Highlights (details in the attached newsletter)  include:

  • Two more students selected to receive HLMT grants at Esther Bacon in Zorzor, Liberia, bringing the number of students supported by HLMT to ten
  • Roger Williams running the Robin Hood Half Marathon on 24th September for HLMT – you can sponsor Roger
  • A Zumbathon on 2nd November organised by HLMT trustee Charmaine Daley – you can sponsor Charm
  • A live music evening on 24th November featuring 3 bands – book your tickets early
  • HLMT arts / crafts / plant stalls on 30th September, 14th October and 9th December

1. HLMT-sponsored students in Liberia

In July 2023 Patience Dee was selected to receive a HLMT grant to cover her student fees, accommodation and basic expenses for the 4-year degree course at a detailed student selection event at the Esther Bacon School of Nursing and Midwifery. She is one of fourteen children, comes from Grand Bassa and because her family could not afford to pay her school fees, worked part-time to complete her high school studies, which she achieved with good grades. Receiving a HLMT grant is “a dream come true.”

Lorpu Wolewu was selected to receive a HLMT grant at a further selection interview at Esther Bacon in early September. She is one of six children brought up by subsistence farmers in Massawu Town and the first family member to apply for university education – she was only able to accept a place with the help of the HLMT grant.

The addition of Patience and Lorpu brings to 10 the number of students who will be receiving HLMT grants in the academic year starting in September 2023. Much of this has only been possible due to HLMT supporters taking out Standing Orders, making donations and supporting the trust’s work in other ways.

2. Roger Williams is running the Robin Hood Half Marathon on Sunday 24th September

Roger is generously doing this, both to raise funds for HLMT and to show that he can do it. Wherever you are, you can sponsor HLMT supporter Roger Williams. You’ll find details of Roger’s run at:

https://www.peoplesfundraising.com/fundraising/rwhlmt?fbclid=IwAR2Cm3C6nUjAW2INNWP5RYHT7Iq80x0ODErOBPRfLQV9WE3wshHZyk2qevc

Roger says, “The charity has achieved a great deal in a few short years and I’m very happy to make this effort on the Trust’s behalf.” Please spur Roger on and support HLMT by making a donation on his page.

7. Shop online via Easyfundraising and automatically raise funds for HLMT

Simply sign up with Easyfundraising https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ by creating an account (it’s free) and then choose The Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust as your good cause. Each time you shop via a Google search or go to a website linked to Easyfundraising links with, a “Donation Link” tab automatically appears.  If you click on this it takes you to the site you want to look at and when you buy anything, a small percentage goes to HLMT. It’s as easy as that.

Please give it a go and help raise funds for midwifery training!

The amount raised per online transaction may be small, but the amount raised by those who’ve signed up to Easyfundraising is already well over £100. Please encourage all your family, friends and contacts to sign up and to nominate The Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust as their chosen cause.

8. Standing orders, donations and bequeaths in wills

HLMT aims to increase the number of Liberian midwifery students it sponsors from year to year. The mainstay of our fundraising is the regular Standing Orders and one-off donations from supporters, which are crucial to our work and for which we are so grateful. We continue to fundraise, however we have a long way to go before we are financially sustainable into the future.

Our overheads are minimal, there are no paid staff and all the funds we raise are used to fund the training costs of student midwives in Liberia. If you have not already done so, it would be tremendous if you could please set up a Standing Order, no matter how small or large. https://hlmt.org.uk/hlmt-Standing-Order-Mandate.pdf Please return the form to us and not to your bank.

Whilst we hope that all of our supporters have long and happy lives, we would also be very grateful if you feel able to include HLMT in your will!

As always, a massive “thank you” to everyone who has supported the work of The Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust
www.hlmt.org.uk. Helen would be astonished but very proud at what is being achieved in her memory.
