Do you have any coins or notes in a jam jar or lurking in the back of a drawer, from holidays which are a distant memory, (or maybe some old British currency you’ve been hoarding)???

HLMT can convert this into funds to pay for the training of midwives in Liberia!

Just bring them along to any of our events

or pass on to one of the trustees

5. Recent Events

* Live Music Night, Friday 29th November 2024

At another sold out event, a packed hall was entertained to some wonderful music by:

Kellys Heroes: fast and furious Celtic tunes and songs, gentle ballads, quality contemporary numbers as well as some original material

Karen Macleod: Raw and rootsy acoustic blues, American folk, self-penned songs – all accompanied by gutsy finger picking

At the end of the evening, over £1440 had been raised for HLMT funds, all of which will go to training midwifery students in Liberia. Huge thanks to the musicians and to HLMT volunteers Ingrid, Michael, Paula, Pete and Stella for their work on the night.

* Rosa’s Lovely Daughters fundraising gig for HLMT 14th December 2024

Rosa’s Lovely Daughters organised a reunion gig and donated all proceeds from donations and a raffle to HLMT. HLMT also had their merchandise stall at the event.

Over £520 was raised, which is wonderful. Huge thanks to Bronwyn, Hilary, Maggie and Nicki from Rosa’s for organising the event and the music, to Angie and Pete S for the poetry, and Pete L and Stella for bringing and running the HLMT stall. All funds raised will go to pay the fees of student midwives in Liberia.

* Live Music Night, Saturday 1st February 2025

This sold-out gig was treated to a wonderful night’s music. Lowered Tones produced some beautifully soulful playing and singing; Tim and Esme Garland sang some fabulous songs with exquisite harmonies; and Borderline ended the night’s entertainment with their infectious mix of rock and Americana that had many people up and dancing. And by the end of this memorable evening over £1350 had been raised for HLMT funds – all of which will go to midwifery training in Liberia.

Huge thanks go to all the musicians, Dave Martin on sound, Sherwood United Reformed Church, and the HLMT trustees and supporters – Carol, Chris, Ingrid, Jane, Kate, Michael, Nick, Pete, Pippa, Sam and Stella – who worked behind the scenes to make things happen.

* Talk to Women’s Institute, 25th February 2025

HLMT trustee, Carol McCormick, gave an excellent talk about HLMT and her involvement in it to a packed meeting of the WI. A  lot of interest and active discussion followed, and a small HLMT stall raised over £160 for HLMT funds.

6. Standing orders, donations and bequeaths in wills

HLMT aims to recruit at least 2 new midwifery students each academic year.

The mainstay of our fundraising is the regular Standing Orders and one-off donations from supporters, which are crucial to our work and for which we are so grateful. We continue to fundraise, however we have a long way to go before we are financially sustainable into the future.

Our overheads are minimal – there are no paid staff; so almost all the funds we raise are used to fund the training costs of student midwives in Liberia. If you have not already done so, it would be tremendous if you could please set up a Standing Order, no matter how small or large.

Please return the form to HLMT at the address on the form and NOT to your bank.

Whilst we hope that all of our supporters have long and happy lives, we would also be very grateful if you feel able to include HLMT in your will!

As always, a massive “thank you” to everyone who has supported the work of The Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust
www.hlmt.org.uk – also to our trustees, volunteers, supporters, and Sherwood URC for providing space for us to meet and hold events at minimal cost.

Helen would be astonished but very proud at what is being achieved in her memory!
